Surgical workload of a foreign medical team after Typhoon Haiyan
The Philippines was struck by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, causing 6300 deaths and injuring more than 28,000 people. A State of National Calamity was called.
The Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) deployed to the Philippines with a field hospital. Two teams of 37 health workers rotated through to provide inpatient and outpatient emergency care. Staff included medical, nursing, paramedical personnel, as well as a surgical team consisting of general and orthopedic surgeons, anesthetists, and perioperative nurses.
