Virtual Care Codes Made Permanent for Physicians
New methods of care need to be implemented during the pandemic to reduce exposure of patients and providers and maintain continuity of care even if services can't be offered in person for everyone. Billing for these services (such as virtual care) needs to be taken into account.
Effective immediately, the virtual care codes introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic will remain in the Schedule of Medical benefits (SOMB) permanently. These virtual care codes are no longer restricted to situations when a declaration of a public health emergency is made pursuant to 52.1(1) of the Public Health Act; or when the Chief Medical Office of Health determines in their discretion that it is appropriate.
All existing rules with regards to these virtual care codes will remain in place, as well as the rates. These virtual care codes will also remain excluded from the daily patient visit cap.
Alberta Health will continue to monitor these virtual care codes and make adjustments as needed.
