The Quebec midwifery experiment: Lessons for Canada
In this issue a multidisciplinary group of researchers report their findings on the functioning of the Quebec midwifery pilot projects. This research was commissioned by the Quebec government as a necessary pre-condition for the legalization of midwifery. The evaluation would ideally have been carried out under conditions where the functioning of midwives and the system itself ought to allow for a judgement on quality. Unfortunately, the conditions under which the experiment unfolded were less than ideal, leading to many unanswered questions.
